Survey on Language Tests and Certificates at Universities

In the last years, language certificates for accreditation of language competence have proliferated, with varied exam constructs and administration methods, including “at home” exams that responded to a particular need during the pandemic.

For universities, it has been increasingly difficult to assess the validity of such exams, and the intentions of their examination boards, as language certification is becoming a big market in our globalised world. However, it is also true that we have language testing experts working for our language centres that are able to analyse exam validity studies and provide sound reasons for the acceptance or rejection of language certificates for high stakes purposes.

The goal of this survey is to provide all language centres with information of what is being done around Europe regarding the acceptance of language certificates by universities, to give us reasons to validate certificates or grounds to reject them, based on the expertise of language testing professionals in all of our language centres.

It is of course a consultation of the practices that are being carried out and to be used solely and exclusively for information purposes for our universities. With this objective in mind, the results will be shared freely with all language centres interested and the information obtained will not be used for any other purposes.
