Motivation and Language Teacher Education: A Call to a Action
Tuesday, 22 September 2026, 16:00- 17:00 CEST
How can language teacher education help address the growing challenge of learner motivation?
Join the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) for a one-hour webinar introducing Motivation and Language Teacher Education: A Call to a Action, a new initiative developed by the ECML Motivation Working Group and to be published around the European Day of Languages 2026.
Recent European studies, including the 2023 Eurydice Key Data Report on Teaching Languages at School in Europe and the 2024 Eurobarometer on Europeans and their Languages, indicate that progress in the learning of languages other than English remains limited. One of the most frequently cited reasons is a lack of learner motivation.
In response, the ECML published its Motivation Manifesto on the European Day of Languages 2025, highlighting the need for a broad and sustainable motivational ecology supported by the collective efforts of multiple actors. Language teacher educators play a particularly important role in this process.
During this webinar, members of the ECML Motivation Working Group will present the new Call to Action for Language Teacher Educators, outlining practical ways in which teacher education can contribute to fostering and sustaining learners’ motivation for language learning.
